Calgary Traffic-Stop Impersonation & Obstruction — Charges Withdrawn

R. v. X.X. – 4751

Allegation

X.X. was charged in Calgary with obstruction of a peace officer and impersonation, contrary to sections 129(a) and 403(1)(a) of the Criminal Code. The charges stemmed from a late-night traffic stop in which X.X. was accused of providing false identification and misrepresenting his identity to officers. Police alleged that he repeatedly gave another individual’s name and date of birth during the interaction and only later admitted who he actually was. According to the prosecution, this caused confusion during the investigation and resulted in the wrongful issuance of documents to another person.

Obstruction and impersonation are treated as serious offences in Canadian law, particularly when they interfere with an officer’s lawful duties or lead to mistaken legal consequences for others. The Crown proceeded with the case by indictment and considered it a deliberate and aggravating misuse of identity.

Result

All charges withdrawn.
