Calgary Targeted Shooting (HAWCS Footage) — Stay of Proceedings

R. v. X.X. – 2025 – 5551b

Allegation

Police alleged that X.X. was involved in a targeted shooting outside a residence in Calgary. According to the Crown, the accused and another individual waited in a vehicle near the home until a person exited the house—at which point one of them opened fire. They hit the exterior of the residence, narrowly missing occupants inside. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing a vehicle fleeing the area. Officers were quickly dispatched, and the Calgary Police Service’s HAWCS helicopter was called in to track the fleeing car from above.

HAWCS footage is considered some of the highest quality aerial surveillance available in Canadian law enforcement—equipped with high-definition infrared and 4K optical zoom capabilities. In this case, the helicopter camera followed the suspect vehicle, capturing footage the Crown argued was crystal-clear and visually linked the vehicle to the scene of the shooting. Patrol officers intercepted the car, conducted a high-risk takedown, and recovered a gun during the subsequent search.

The accused was arrested and charged with a range of serious offences. In Canadian law, firearms are among the most severe charges a person can face outside of homicide.

Result

Sean Fagan ultimately secured a stay of proceedings. The matter was discontinued without trial and no conviction was entered.
